“The Cockleshell Raid” is one of the well-known Osprey Publications series, and offers a concise look at the British commando raid on the German-held French port of Bordeaux in December, 1942. Although five vessels in the harbour were damaged, not sunk, the psychological victory of a surprise attack was a ‘win’ for the British. However, only two of ten Royal Marines who set out on the raid returned alive.
Easy to read with maps, black and white photographs and colour illustrations, this is a fine book for anyone interested in British special operations in Europe in the Second World War.
